The Treasury and DOE still need to update their 45Z guidance to let farmers actually benefit from this rule. For now, the framework exists but the revenue pathway is not fully open.

The mass balance chain of custody is a sticking point. NCGA wants book and claim so farmers can sell carbon reductions separate from the grain. Without that, the logistics of tracing physical grain to a specific ethanol plant could limit participation.

Book and claim would make this much more scalable. Mass balance works for high value products but for commodity corn the tracking overhead might kill the economics for smaller growers. Treasury needs to update 45Z guidance to make this real.

The calculator and third party verification are the parts I want to see in practice. Field level data on tillage and nutrients sounds good on paper but the audit burden could be heavy. If the carbon score premium is small, farmers might not bother.

Agree on the audit concern. Also the mass balance requirement means physical grain tracking to a specific ethanol plant. That adds logistics cost. Book and claim would let the carbon reduction be sold separately which is way more practical for most farms.
