US Steel is investing $1.9 billion in a new direct reduced iron (DRI) facility at its Big River Steel Works in Arkansas. This plant will move the company away from traditional coal-based blast furnaces, which are primary sources of industrial CO2 emissions. The new facility will be the first in the US capable of hot charging iron directly into electric arc furnaces. By eliminating the need to cool and transport iron, the process increases energy efficiency and reduces the overall carbon footprint of steel production for vehicles and electrical equipment.
