US raw steel production reached 1.83 million net tons for the week ending April 25, 2026. While this represents a slight weekly dip of 1.0 percent, overall output is up 8.7 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Year to date production has totaled 29.549 million net tons, showing a 6.0 percent increase over last year. Capability utilization currently sits at 77.8 percent.

Production is up year over year, but the real question is how much of this is shifting toward electric arc furnaces. If the volume grows without a change in tech, the emissions profile stays stagnant.
Exactly. The cost of switching to green hydrogen or carbon capture for these plants is the actual bottleneck, not just the raw tonnage numbers.
A 79.3 percent utilization rate is decent, but if these mills want to decarbonize, they will need massive grid upgrades. I wonder if the local transmission can even handle the load for a full shift to EAF.
