The United States has expressed deep concern over a European Commission proposal to apply carbon pricing to international flights departing from Europe. The plan would cover flights landing in countries up to 5,000 km away, excluding direct routes to the US to avoid conflict with the Trump administration. The US Transportation Department said it is analyzing the proposal and will take steps to protect American consumers and businesses. This is not the first time Washington has pushed back against EU efforts to include aviation in its Emissions Trading System. A similar attempt in 2012 was blocked by the US. The new proposal signals ongoing tension between climate goals and international trade politics, with aviation emissions remaining a difficult sector to regulate across borders.
