A new report from the Energy Institute, in partnership with Ember and KPMG, finds the United States accounted for roughly one third of the global rise in energy-related carbon emissions in 2025. US coal consumption jumped 10% last year as higher gas prices pushed power producers back to coal, reversing a decade long trend of falling emissions in North America. Global energy sector CO2 emissions rose 1.1% to 35,806 million metric tons. Renewable power generation still grew 9.1% worldwide, led by a 30% surge in solar. But electricity demand rose 3% year on year, driven by electric vehicles, data centers, and AI, outpacing clean energy supply growth. Europe's energy emissions increased 0.5% and China's rose 0.7%. Global oil consumption hit 103 million barrels per day, up 1.3%.
