US leads 2025 global CO2 emissions rise as coal use jumps 10%, Energy Institute report finds

U.S. coal consumption jumped 10% as higher gas prices pushed power producers back to coal, reversing a decade-long trend of declining emissions in North America. Global energy sector CO2 emissions rose 1.1% to 35,806 million metric tons. Renewable power generation grew 9.1% worldwide, led by a 30% surge in solar, but electricity demand rose 3% fueled by electric vehicles, data centers, and AI. China's emissions increased 0.7% and Europe's rose 0.5%. Global oil consumption hit 103 million barrels per day, up 1.3%, while gasoline and diesel use declined in China for a second year.
