US is restarting Palisades, Three Mile Island, and Duane Arnold nuclear plants for data center power
ksl.comThe U.S. Department of Energy is lending up to $4.4 billion to restart three shuttered nuclear plants: Palisades in Michigan, Crane Clean Energy Center at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, and Duane Arnold in Iowa. Together they would add 2.25 GW of carbon-free capacity, roughly enough for 2 million homes. Google and Microsoft have signed power purchase agreements for two of the plants, so data center demand is underwriting much of the restart cost. Supporters say restarting a reactor is faster and cheaper than building a new large one, and Palisades would be the first commercial reactor to return after beginning decommissioning. Critics question why taxpayers should back projects whose output is already contracted to Big Tech, and they point to safety upgrades needed for older plants. For grid watchers, this is a real test of whether nuclear restarts can add firm low-carbon power on a tight timeline.
