US Firms Partner on Silicon-Sulfur Battery Platform for eVTOL and Drones
electronicsforyou.bizXponential Battery Materials and SiCAM Technologies have formed a partnership to build a silicon-sulfur battery platform for US battery makers. The design pairs SiCAM's silicon-carbon anode with XBM's lithium-sulfur cathode, aiming for higher energy density than conventional lithium-ion cells. Initial targets are lightweight eMobility applications such as eVTOL aircraft and drones. Both companies say the raw materials are widely available in the US. Silicon is abundant in the earth's crust, sulfur comes from petroleum refining, and XBM's cathode uses carbon from lignin, a paper industry byproduct. SiCAM says its fluidized-bed CVD process using trichlorosilane is designed to control the swelling that silicon anodes typically experience. The partnership is still early stage. No production timeline or commercial cell specifications were announced. The companies are working on integrating the anode and cathode materials first.
