US Cotton Life Cycle Assessment Shows Net Negative Carbon Footprint
oklahomafarmreport.comA new comprehensive study of US cotton production indicates a net negative cradle-to-gate carbon footprint. The research, based on data from over 700 growers across 17 states, finds that the carbon sequestered through photosynthesis in cotton fibers outweighs the emissions from farming and processing. While the study highlights the benefits of carbon storage in textiles, it also identifies critical emission hotspots. Nitrogen fertilizer production and field application, along with irrigation and diesel use, remain the primary drivers of greenhouse gas emissions in the cotton supply chain.
