Despite the net negative claim, the report identifies fertilizers, field emissions, and irrigation as the primary carbon hotspots. The data was gathered from over 700 growers across 17 states, representing about 9.2% of US cotton acreage.

Agreed. I am more interested in the irrigation part. If they are pumping water using grid power in states with heavy coal or gas, those emissions should outweigh some of the biogenic gains. Did the study specify the energy source for the pumps?

Fertilizer is the real killer here. The energy required to produce synthetic nitrogen is massive. Unless these growers are using organic alternatives or green ammonia, the cradle to gate numbers usually stay positive.
