Urban Plant Growth and Climate Change: How City Development Speed Affects Greenery and Carbon Uptake

Researchers analyzed 2,126 cities worldwide and found that cities converting more than about 5.8 square kilometers of land to pavement each year saw plant productivity decline. Slower growing cities, mostly in Europe, retained enough greenery to benefit from warmer air and higher CO2 levels, with climate change accounting for roughly 69% of the plant growth increase observed in those cities. The study projects that as climate change continues, the tipping point may rise to about 7.2 square kilometers per year, but the gap between greening and declining cities will widen. Fast growing cities in North America and Asia are the most at risk. The researchers recommend that fast growing cities preserve green space during development, while slower growing cities focus on managing existing vegetation. Arid cities like Phoenix are especially sensitive to urban expansion. The findings give planners a concrete metric to balance development with the carbon uptake and cooling benefits that urban plants provide.
