Researchers at the University of Queensland have created an electrochemical generator that turns captured carbon dioxide, water, and electricity into formate, the base compound for formic acid. This process offers a way for high emissions industries to reuse waste CO2 as a raw material for chemicals used in agriculture and pharmaceuticals. The modular design allows for on site production, reducing the risks and emissions associated with transporting hazardous chemicals. While the technology is currently in the testing phase, it aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuel based chemical manufacturing and imported supplies.
