UPM Communication Papers cuts Scope 1 and 2 emissions 38% per tonne in 2025, on track for 2030 climate target

UPM Communication Papers published its 2025 climate report, showing a 38% reduction in fossil CO2 emissions from its own operations and purchased energy per tonne of paper compared to the 2023 baseline. The average Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint at its European mills dropped to 310 kg CO2 per tonne in 2025, down from 400 kg in 2024 and 490 kg in 2023. The company launched its climate action roadmap in November 2025, targeting ≤100 kg CO2 per tonne by 2030, a more than 70% cut from 2023 levels. The reductions are driven by increased renewable electricity use, expanded electric boiler capacity, and better energy efficiency and transport planning. UPM Blandin in the US also reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 31% year over year, though it is not covered by the European target. UPM says the progress helps customers lower their own carbon footprints through verified, transparent emissions data. The report covers European operations only, with third-party verification supporting the figures.
