New research suggests the most extreme climate warming projections are now unlikely due to the rapid adoption of solar, wind, and geothermal energy. While these gains have lowered the ceiling for potential temperature increases, they have not happened fast enough to keep the world within the 1.5C limit set by the Paris Agreement. Scientists now see a narrowing range of plausible futures. The current trajectory points toward roughly 3C of warming by 2100, while the best-case scenario likely peaks at 1.7C before potentially declining if large-scale carbon removal technologies are deployed.
