UP issues 77,800 Soil Health Cards in Prayagraj to fight soil degradation and cut fertiliser overuse
timesofindia.indiatimes.comUttar Pradesh has issued 77,800 Soil Health Cards to farmers in Prayagraj district, part of a push to reverse soil damage from excessive chemical fertiliser use. The district hit its 8,800-card target for the current Kharif season in October. Cards are based on 12 soil parameters, including organic carbon, which officials say is below the medium range of 280 to 560 kg per hectare across much of the district. Low organic carbon means soil compacts, drains quickly, and supports fewer earthworms and beneficial bacteria. That raises irrigation needs and weakens nutrient supply. Alongside the cards, agriculture officials are promoting Trichoderma, green manure, drip and sprinkler irrigation, and the 'Per Drop More Crop' approach. Twenty-four Krishi Sakhis are helping bring rural women into the programme.
