UNSW SMaRT Centre Gold Award: Waste Glass and Textiles Turned Into Low-Carbon Ceramic Tiles
theaustraliatoday.com.auUNSW's SMaRT Centre has won a 2026 Australian Good Design Award Gold for Green Ceramics MICROfactorie technology that turns hard-to-recycle glass and textile waste into engineered ceramic tiles. Developed with Liverpool City Council, the process produces tiles at 130 degrees Celsius in under six minutes, using a fraction of the energy of conventional ceramic manufacturing. The jury noted the tiles have a wet flexural strength of 26.2 megapascals and perfect stain resistance. According to the award citation, the technology diverts more than 500 tonnes of glass and 18 tonnes of textile waste from landfill each year, while cutting embodied carbon by an estimated 46 percent compared with conventional tiles. Professor Veena Sahajwalla framed the work as part of a broader circular economy push, with waste treated as a resource for remanufacturing rather than a disposal problem. The win highlights a practical example of low-carbon material innovation moving beyond the lab. The MICROfactorie model is designed to be scalable, and commercial partnerships like the one with Liverpool City Council are key to getting these products into real building projects.
