University of Washington AI Tool Calculates Device Carbon Footprints in Under a Minute

The tool uses two AI agents to pull data from product descriptions, manufacturer guides, and existing life cycle assessment databases. The system's error rate ranges from 5% to 19%, which is comparable to manual human assessments. For materials not covered in existing databases, the AI averaged a 23% error rate versus 143% for manual calculations. The research team has released the browser extension code as open source. The tool is not yet widely deployed, but it points toward faster, cheaper carbon accounting for electronics supply chains.
