The University of Tasmania has been named the world's best university for climate action in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the fifth consecutive year. The rankings measure progress on UN Sustainable Development Goals, including research, low-carbon energy use, and carbon neutrality. UTAS is one of only three Australian universities certified carbon neutral under the federal Climate Active program, a status it has held for 10 years. The university is nearly halfway to its target of cutting gross emissions by at least 50% by 2030, using a 2015 baseline. Its Curious Climate Schools program connects students aged 10 to 18 with climate scientists, and researchers have worked with communities affected by the 2022 floods in northern Tasmania to improve flood planning. Some resilience work draws on Aboriginal traditional knowledge. The result comes as climate action slows in many parts of the world, according to Vice-Chancellor Rufus Black. Chief Sustainability Officer Corey Peterson said the university's long-term approach is delivering results and motivating further progress.
