Researchers at the University of South Wales are piloting a closed loop system called HYDROLOOP. The technology uses treated wastewater as a feedstock for hydrogen production via an electrolyser, while recycling the resulting oxygen to improve the sewage treatment process. This approach aims to lower operational costs for water utilities and reduce the emission of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. By removing the need for freshwater in hydrogen production, the project provides a scalable model for decarbonizing industrial water and energy systems.
