Researchers at the University of Queensland have created a modular system that uses water and electricity to convert waste carbon dioxide into formate. This compound serves as the base for formic acid, a critical chemical used in rubber manufacturing, leather tanning, and agriculture. The technology aims to reduce Australia's reliance on formic acid imports from China. By deploying these modular units directly at emission sources, industries can capture their own CO2 and convert it into usable chemical feedstock on site.
