The University of Cape Town has entered a 10 year power purchase agreement with Discovery Green to transition its Main and Health Sciences campuses to renewable energy. The deal aims to cover 70 to 90 percent of electricity consumption, reducing annual carbon emissions by approximately 33,200 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Because campus heritage buildings limit on-site solar installation, UCT is using a wheeling model. This allows the university to purchase green energy from remote wind and solar farms and receive financial credits against Eskom tariffs, providing a scalable blueprint for other public institutions in South Africa.
