Universal Carbon, a Hamburg-based climate tech company, has officially launched its direct air capture (DAC) and liquid carbon capture (LCC) technology. The company was also named a finalist for the 2026 Hamburg Innovation Awards, with winners announced on June 18. Universal Carbon focuses on turning biogenic CO2 and biomethane streams into usable commodities, aiming to monetize emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. To date, Universal Carbon has deployed 11 DAC systems, including what it describes as the most reliable plant in its class in Canada. The system uses a solid amine-based filter to capture CO2 directly from the air. The company's technology was developed in partnership with Airbus and deployed at the Deep Sky Alpha site in Alberta in November 2025. The Hamburg Innovation Awards nomination highlights the growing interest in scalable carbon removal solutions.
