United Utilities is spending more than 4.8 million pounds on two projects in Troutbeck, Cumbria, to upgrade water mains and wastewater treatment. The work includes installing two chemical-free FujiClean sewage treatment units that remove phosphorus without chemicals, a low-carbon approach to improving water quality in the Windermere catchment. The water mains upgrade along Holbeck Lane runs from June to August 2025. This is part of a larger 13 billion pound regional investment plan to improve rivers, lakes, and drinking water supplies. The wastewater treatment upgrade starts later in summer 2025 and will run for about a year. The FujiClean units replace chemical treatment with a biological process, cutting both operational emissions and chemical use.
