Regulators in Wales and England have raised concerns over Uniper's proposed 1,380 MW gas-fired power station at Connah's Quay. The project, which intends to use the HyNet network for carbon storage in Liverpool Bay, is facing scrutiny over nitrogen pollution in the Dee Estuary and the loss of critical habitat for red-listed curlew birds. Natural Resources Wales and Natural England are questioning whether the developer's mitigation plans are sufficient or if they should be legally classified as compensation. This distinction is critical, as it would require Uniper to prove the project is in the overriding public interest to justify the environmental impact.
