Uniper has selected SLB Capturi's carbon capture technology for a UK power project, marking a concrete step in deploying CCS at a gas-fired plant. The deal involves SLB's modular capture system designed to pull CO2 from the plant's flue gas before it reaches the atmosphere. This is one of the larger CCS applications tied to a European power station and could set a precedent for how retrofit carbon capture gets financed and permitted in the UK. The project still needs to clear engineering studies and final investment decisions, but the technology selection narrows the risk. SLB Capturi claims its process uses a proprietary solvent and compact design to reduce energy penalty compared to older amine systems. If this scales, it could change the economics of keeping gas plants online while meeting UK decarbonization targets. For carbon credit watchers, the interesting angle is whether the captured CO2 gets stored permanently or fed into enhanced oil recovery or industrial use. The answer will determine how much of the tonnage qualifies as genuine removal rather than avoided emissions. The UK's carbon pricing and storage licensing framework will also play a role in whether projects like this actually get built.
