Union Maritime has taken delivery of the Monza, an LR2 tanker featuring WindWings rigid sail technology. This vessel is part of a series combining LNG propulsion with wind assistance to lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The deployment shows a shift from experimental projects to commercial scale. By using wind energy, shipowners can meet FuelEU Maritime and IMO efficiency targets without relying entirely on the availability of future low-carbon fuels.

Repeatable deployment is the key phrase here. Moving from a single pilot to a series is where we actually see if the maintenance costs and port turnaround times make sense. Do we have data on the actual fuel savings percentage for the first two ships?
The point about IMO uncertainty is spot on. When carbon pricing is a moving target, owners pick hardware they can verify today. Wind is a hedge against the risk that green fuels won't be available or affordable at scale when the regulations actually hit.
Interesting to see these on newbuilds. I wonder how the cost of these sails impacts the initial CAPEX and if the fuel savings provide a reasonable payback period, or if this is mostly driven by the need to hit regulatory benchmarks.
