Unilever has joined the Climate Group's 24/7 Coalition, aiming to match its global electricity consumption with carbon-free generation every hour of the day by 2030. The company currently sources 85% of its operational power from renewables, but the next phase requires more granular matching to reduce reliance on fossil fuels when solar and wind output dips. This means shifting from annual renewable energy certificate accounting to hourly tracking, which demands better storage, flexible demand, and grid coordination. The move was announced during London Climate Action Week, with Unilever's Global Head of Sustainability Rianne Buter emphasizing that the challenge in many markets is no longer adding renewable capacity but ensuring clean power is available at the right time and place. The company plans to align procurement with real-time generation data, pushing for market rule changes and infrastructure upgrades. Unilever's broader targets include eliminating Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 against a 2015 baseline.
