Unilever joins Google and others in coalition for hourly matched carbon-free electricity procurement
edie.netUnilever and Cathay Financial Holdings have joined the Climate Group's coalition for hourly matching of carbon-free electricity. The initiative, which already includes Google, AstraZeneca, and Vodafone, pushes companies to match their electricity consumption with carbon-free sources on an hourly basis rather than annually. This approach aims to drive real-time grid decarbonization and avoid the accounting loopholes of annual renewable energy certificates. Hourly matching requires companies to procure clean power that aligns with their actual usage patterns, which encourages investment in firm clean power sources like storage, nuclear, or geothermal alongside wind and solar. It also puts pressure on utilities and grid operators to provide more granular data and pricing. The coalition is part of a broader push toward 24/7 carbon-free energy procurement, which is becoming a new standard for corporate climate leadership.
