UNIDO backs Oman's solar PV manufacturing push as part of clean energy industrial strategy
omanobserver.omUNIDO has highlighted Oman as a rising industrial economy in the Middle East, pointing to its push into solar photovoltaic manufacturing as a key example. The UN agency's Asia-Pacific Industrial Development Report 2026 cites Oman's use of public procurement and foreign investment to build a local PV supply chain instead of just importing solar equipment. Oman already has 1.7 GW of installed solar capacity and another 39.5 GW of projects announced, worth around $49 billion. A flagship project is United Solar Polysilicon in Suhar, which aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of polysilicon annually using TOPCon cell technology. The country also has high-quality silica reserves and access to cheap renewable electricity, which could help lower production costs for manufacturers. The report credits Oman's Vision 2040 and Manufacturing for Well-being Strategy 2040 for creating incentives like tax holidays and full foreign ownership in special economic zones. These policies are meant to turn the country into a regional hub for solar manufacturing rather than a passive buyer of finished goods.
