UNEP report: World likely to breach 1.5°C limit soon, outlines overshoot and decline path
newindianexpress.comThe United Nations Environment Programme has released a report titled 'Limiting Overshoot' warning that global temperatures are expected to exceed the 1.5°C target within the next few years. The most optimistic scenario sees a peak of 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels, with other models predicting higher. The report highlights accelerating ocean acidification, especially in the Indian and Arctic Oceans, and warns of irreversible tipping points like ice sheet collapse and Amazon degradation. To avoid the worst outcomes, the report proposes an 'overshoot, peak and decline' pathway that combines immediate emissions cuts, including methane, with long-term net-negative emissions and carefully governed carbon dioxide removal. It stresses that countries with the greatest responsibility for climate change must act swiftly and with the highest ambition, backed by financial support and inclusive governance. The goal is to return below 1.5°C as soon as possible, but the window for action is narrowing rapidly.
