UNEP Report: US Emissions Surge Worsens Climate Outlook, World on Track for 2.6C Warming
economictimes.indiatimes.comUNEP's latest emissions gap report finds the world is falling further behind on climate goals. The US formally withdrew from the Paris Agreement and raised emissions by 133 megatons of CO2 equivalent in 2025, driven by higher electricity demand and a rebound in coal generation. That one country accounted for 70% of the net increase among the 124 countries that added emissions. The report now projects roughly 2.6C of warming by 2100 if current national pledges are fully implemented, and 2.8C on today's trajectory. Both miss the Paris targets. UN officials say limiting warming to 1.5C is no longer possible and hope to hold near 1.8C, then pull CO2 out of the air later. The US policy shift alone is expected to add about 0.1C to end-of-century temperatures. Outside scientists say the real effect is larger because US retreat weakens pressure on other countries to act.
