UNDP: Vietnam's blue economy could generate $70B by 2030, but needs stronger marine governance and green finance
vietnam.vnanet.vnThe UNDP says Vietnam has the natural assets and policy foundations to build a large blue economy, but the gap between planning and delivery remains wide. Offshore wind potential exceeds 1,000GW, and marine ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass hold significant carbon. The UNDP estimates blue economy sectors could bring in about $70B by 2030, roughly 35% of GDP, under the right conditions. To get there, the UNDP recommends four priorities: better coordination in marine spatial governance, faster conservation, stronger marine data and MRV systems, and more flexible green financial instruments. It also flags that different blue economy models have different risk and capital needs, so financing has to be tailored. Norway's integrated management plans and traceability systems are cited as a reference. The article is useful because it connects climate goals, carbon storage, and renewable energy to concrete economic numbers. It also points at specific implementation gaps, which is where the real work is.
