thenewdawnliberia.comLiberia is strengthening its push into global carbon markets with backing from the United Nations Development Programme. The UNDP Liberia Country Office met with the Liberia Carbon Market Authority to discuss expanding access to climate finance. Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah confirmed the meeting, noting that UNDP Resident Representative Aliou Dia praised the Authority's progress and stressed the need for a credible policy and regulatory framework to attract responsible investment. Liberia holds over 40 percent of the remaining Upper Guinean rainforest, making it one of West Africa's most forested nations. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai established the Liberia Carbon Market Authority via Executive Order No. 155 in October 2025. The Authority is tasked with regulating carbon credit transactions, ensuring compliance with global standards, and channeling revenue from forest conservation to both the government and local communities. The UNDP partnership aims to help Liberia convert its natural assets into sustainable economic value while preserving environmental integrity.
