A new UNDP report warns that the global AI race is becoming an energy race, with access to clean, affordable electricity as a key factor in national competitiveness. Data center electricity consumption could exceed 945 terawatt hours by 2030, and the report urges developing countries to integrate AI and energy policy to avoid an extractive digital pattern where they supply resources but capture little value. The report defines Green AI as aligning AI development with clean energy and human development, highlighting opportunities in grid optimization and renewable integration. However, it cautions that without stable grids, regulation, and local demand, renewable potential alone won't attract high-value AI infrastructure. Developing countries should focus on modular, energy-efficient systems and building local innovation ecosystems to capture economic benefits.
