By 2030, global data centers are projected to consume 945 terawatt-hours of electricity each year, nearly triple the combined usage of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. The water footprint of these facilities is expected to match the basic domestic water needs of all 1.3 billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study highlights that focusing only on carbon emissions misses the bigger picture. Choices that look green from a carbon standpoint can be worse for water or land use. For example, running models like ChatGPT to answer user prompts now accounts for 80 to 90 percent of total AI energy use, far more than the energy needed for initial training. Video generation is emerging as a major concern, with a single short AI video consuming as much electricity as 200,000 spam classifications. The report calls for responsible AI development that stays within planetary limits. It stresses that efficiency gains alone won't solve the problem, as cheaper and more efficient AI tends to drive higher overall consumption. The authors urge policymakers to consider water, land, and mineral impacts alongside carbon when planning data center infrastructure.
