A UN study published in June 2026 found that Hong Kong data centres have some of the highest carbon footprints globally, with carbon intensity 43% above the world average. The report blames Hong Kong's energy mix, which is 67% fossil fuels, 32% nuclear, and only 1% renewables. India and Indonesia also ranked poorly at 51% and 62% above average respectively. The study, titled 'Environmental Cost of AI's Energy Use', warns that data centres could consume 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, nearly triple the combined electricity use of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. It notes that daily AI use accounts for 80-90% of energy demand, not just training. Hong Kong's water and land footprints were lower because it lacks renewables that require large land areas.

Interesting that Hong Kong's grid is still 67% fossil. With all the data centre buildout there, you'd think they'd be pushing harder on renewables or at least grid decarbonization. The UN number on 945 TWh by 2030 is wild.

Right, but Hong Kong has limited land for solar or wind. They rely on nuclear imports from mainland China. The real fix is probably more nuclear or offshore wind, but that takes years. Data centres won't wait.

Good point. If image generation uses 1000x more energy than text, and ChatGPT is doing 2.5 billion prompts a day, that's a massive load. Regulators might start looking at energy labels for AI services.

Labels could work, but the real lever is carbon pricing on the grid side. If Hong Kong had a high carbon tax, data centres would have a financial reason to locate elsewhere or invest in offsets. The UN report is basically a market signal.

Or they could just get serious about cooling efficiency. Water use was lower in HK because they don't have renewables, but that doesn't mean they can't cut energy per compute. Old data centres are usually terrible on PUE.
