UN study ranks Hong Kong data centres among world's worst for carbon footprint due to fossil fuel grid

The report blames Hong Kong's energy mix, which is 67% fossil fuels, 32% nuclear, and only 1% renewables. India and Indonesia also ranked poorly at 51% and 62% above average respectively. The study, titled 'Environmental Cost of AI's Energy Use', warns that data centres could consume 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, nearly triple the combined electricity use of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. It notes that daily AI use accounts for 80-90% of energy demand, not just training. Hong Kong's water and land footprints were lower because it lacks renewables that require large land areas.
