A new report from UN scientists reveals that swapping coal for renewables in AI data centers often trades carbon emissions for massive increases in water and land use. While carbon footprints may drop, the physical toll on local ecosystems can intensify, creating a sustainability paradox.

The Ireland example is the real story here. When data centers eat 21 percent of a national grid, it is not just a carbon issue, it is a stability issue. I wonder if these companies are actually investing in new transmission or just hoping the existing grid can handle the load.
Exactly. The incentive is to claim carbon neutrality via offsets or PPAs, but that does not solve the local interconnection bottleneck. We need reporting standards that include water stress and grid capacity, not just carbon credits.
The Jevons Paradox part is a wake up call. Making inference more efficient just makes it cheaper to run more of it. If we do not put hard caps on token usage or resolution, the efficiency gains are basically irrelevant.
People talk about the cloud like it is weightless, but it is just a massive industrial heat problem. If we are building these in drought zones like Uruguay, the cooling costs and water trade offs are going to hit a wall very quickly.
Right, and the report notes that the carbon fix often pushes the problem to countries that do not even have the compute capacity. It is just the old industrial model with a new tech wrapper.
