UN report: US withdrawal and coal rebound worsen global climate outlook
gulfcoastnewsnow.comA new UN Environment Programme report finds the world is falling further behind on climate goals, and it points directly at the United States. The US formal exit from the Paris Agreement and a 133 megaton rise in US emissions in 2025 pushed the expected warming this century about 0.1C higher than last year's projection. The report says US coal generation rebounded to meet higher electricity demand, accounting for 70% of the net emissions increase among countries that raised pollution levels. Global temperature projections now sit far above the Paris targets. If countries follow through on current pledges, the world is on track for about 4.7F of warming versus pre-industrial levels, compared with a goal of well below 3.6F. UNEP says cutting emissions 18% by 2030 and 69% by 2040 is the only path back to a manageable climate, and every year of delay makes that task more expensive.
