UN report: US withdrawal and coal rebound push climate goals further out of reach
english.ahram.org.egUNEP's latest emissions gap report finds the world is falling further behind on climate targets, and it points directly at the United States. The formal Paris Agreement withdrawal and a 133 megaton CO2 equivalent jump in US emissions last year account for most of the increase among the top 20 economies. The report says higher electricity demand and a coal power rebound drove the US rise, while other major economies either cut emissions or slowed their growth. If countries hit every pledge they have submitted, the report projects warming of about 2.6C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. On current policies, that rises to 2.8C. Both blow past the Paris goals, and UN officials now concede the 1.5C target is out of reach. The report frames the next few years as a narrow window for action, not a guarantee that anything will change.
