The latest UN Environment Programme update says the world is on track for another 1.2C of warming above current temperatures if countries meet their existing climate pledges. That is about 0.1C worse than last year's projection. The report points to the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and a 133 megaton rise in US CO2 emissions, driven by higher electricity demand and a rebound in coal generation. The US accounted for about 70 percent of the emissions increase among the 124 countries that raised their carbon output in 2025. The report says limiting warming to 1.5C is no longer realistic and that countries need to cut emissions 18 percent by 2030 and 69 percent by 2040 to avoid the worst outcomes. Extra heat would push more people into dangerous conditions and add trillions in economic costs.
