A new United Nations report from UNU-INWEH measures the environmental cost of AI across carbon, water, and land footprints, not just carbon alone. The report finds that AI data centers could draw 945 terawatt-hours of electricity by 2030, with inference (answering prompts) consuming 80 to 90 percent of energy. A single AI image uses about 1,450 times the energy of a simple text task. The report highlights trade-offs: swapping coal for bioenergy cuts carbon by 70 percent but can multiply water use 30-fold and land use 100-fold. It also warns that efficiency gains often backfire via the rebound effect, where cheaper AI leads to more total usage. The UN has called on AI companies to disclose carbon, water, and land footprints and run data centers on renewables by 2030.
