UN Expands Methane Alert System to Coal Mines and Landfills
downtoearth.org.inThe UN Environment Programme is expanding its Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) to include coal mines and waste facilities. This move follows satellite data identifying several landfills in India and Chile as some of the world's largest methane emitters. By using a network of over 35 satellites, the system identifies super-emitters and notifies governments to trigger rapid mitigation. Methane is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term, making these targeted cuts a critical lever for slowing global warming.
