A new UNEP report says the world is falling further behind on climate goals. The formal US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and a rebound in US coal generation pushed projected warming about 0.1C higher than last year's estimate. US emissions rose by 133 megatons of CO2 equivalent in 2025, more than any other country. Even if countries meet their current pledges, the planet is on track for about 2.6C of warming above pre-industrial levels by 2100. That is well past the Paris target of 1.5C, which UN officials now concede is out of reach. The report calls for an 18% cut in global emissions by 2030 to keep any chance of a manageable outcome. The article also notes the knock-on effect: when the largest historical emitter steps back, other nations may ease off too. That makes the US policy shift not just a domestic issue but a global one.
