UN chief calls on AI companies to disclose environmental impact and commit to clean energy by 2030
timesfreepress.comUnited Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged AI companies to publicly report their carbon pollution, water use, and land consumption, and to power data centers with renewables like wind and solar by 2030. Speaking at London Climate Action Week, he proposed the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative to standardize reporting across the industry. Data centers already consume about 1.5% of global electricity, with coal supplying 30% and renewables just 27%. The UN warns that energy use and pollution from AI could double by 2030. Guterres also called for cutting methane and reducing reliance on fossil fuels to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
