Speaking at London Climate Action Week, he proposed the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative to standardize reporting across the industry. Data centers already consume about 1.5% of global electricity, with coal supplying 30% and renewables just 27%. The UN warns that energy use and pollution from AI could double by 2030. Guterres also called for cutting methane and reducing reliance on fossil fuels to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Guterres is right to push for disclosure. Right now we have no standardized way to compare AI energy use across companies. That makes it hard to know who is actually getting cleaner.

Even if they sign up for 100% renewable, the real question is how much new renewable capacity gets built to serve them. If they just buy RECs from existing wind farms, it does not add much to the grid.
