United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed an AI Environmental Transparency Initiative, calling on artificial intelligence companies to measure and disclose their carbon pollution, water use, and land impact. Speaking at London Climate Action Week, Guterres urged AI firms to commit to powering all data centers with renewable energy like wind and solar by 2030. The initiative responds to rising concerns that the rapid growth of AI data centers is driving up greenhouse gas emissions and straining local resources. Currently, coal supplies about 30% of electricity for global data centers, while renewables provide only 27%, according to the International Energy Agency. A recent UN report warns that the environmental footprint of data centers already rivals that of some large countries, with water and energy use expected to double within four years. Guterres emphasized that communities hosting these facilities are often left in the dark about their environmental impact, demanding standardized reporting and accountability from the tech industry.
