Speaking at London Climate Action Week, he proposed an AI Environmental Transparency Initiative to standardize reporting across the industry. The push comes as data center electricity consumption is projected to nearly double from 1.5% of global demand in 2025 to 3% by 2030. Currently, coal supplies about 30% of data center power, while renewables provide 27%. A UN report warns that the environmental footprint of AI infrastructure already rivals that of large countries, with energy and water use expected to double in four years. Guterres framed the call within broader climate goals, urging all major emitters to accelerate action and over-deliver on commitments. While noting progress in renewable energy adoption, he highlighted ongoing challenges including fossil fuel dependence and policy setbacks in the US.

Guterres also called for cutting methane which is good but often gets overshadowed by CO2 targets. AI data centers are a growing source of indirect emissions. Measuring scope 2 and 3 properly will be the hard part.

Renewables hit one third of global electricity mix last year and coal fell below one third. That is real progress. But data center demand growth could eat into those gains if AI companies do not sign PPAs fast enough.

Nobody talks about the water use. Data centers consume massive amounts for cooling especially in water stressed regions. That should be part of any disclosure framework the UN proposes.
