UN-Backed Reports Warn Overshooting 1.5C Could Cause Irreversible Glacier and Ice Sheet Loss
azertag.azTwo UN-backed reports released November 2 warn that exceeding the 1.5C Paris Agreement target could trigger irreversible damage to glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost, and polar oceans. The State of the Cryosphere 2026 report, reviewed by more than 50 scientists, says current warming is already unsafe for Earth's ice systems and notes that Switzerland lost 20% of its glacier ice in five years. A second report, Overshoot and the Cryosphere, calls for at least 5% annual emissions cuts starting immediately and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century. Both reports stress that returning to 1.5C would slow ice loss, but a truly safe temperature target for Earth's ice is closer to 1.0C or below. They also warn that thawing permafrost could release additional carbon, creating a feedback loop that intensifies warming. For carbon markets and climate finance, the takeaway is direct: deep emissions reductions and scaled-up carbon drawdown are needed to limit overshoot and keep sea-level rise within ranges that coastal communities can adapt to.
