UMass researchers study carbon storage in Massachusetts wetlands to guide restoration and climate policy
masslive.comResearchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have received a $500,000 grant from the Healey administration to measure how wetlands across the state store and release carbon. The project, led by the Massachusetts Geological Survey, aims to fill a data gap on inland wetlands, which are often forested and understudied. The team will collect soil samples, measure sequestration rates, and track gas exchange including methane, which is 20 to 30 times more potent than CO2. Results will be shared with state agencies, conservation commissions, and land trusts to inform wetland management and restoration decisions. The research is critical as Massachusetts works to cut greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050. Wetlands cover about 590,000 acres or 12% of the state and can store carbon in soil for thousands of years. But they can also emit methane depending on how they are managed. The project includes partners from Boston University focusing on coastal wetlands and will produce type specific carbon baselines for the whole state. Data collection will take 18 months followed by six months of predictive modeling.
