The Yard Theatre in Hackney Wick, London, has been rebuilt with a facade made from K-BRIQ, an ultra-low carbon brick produced from nearly 100% recycled construction and demolition waste. Developed by Scottish climate tech firm Kenoteq, the unfired brick emits around 95% less carbon than a conventional clay brick. The project saved an estimated 3.5 tonnes of CO2e compared to using clay bricks, and the colorful facade was designed to reflect the area's graffiti culture. The K-BRIQ has achieved BBA Agrément certification in the UK and a DrJ Technical Evaluation Report for the US, making it easier for architects and developers to specify. Kenoteq recently raised nearly £900,000 to scale production at its Edinburgh facility. The Yard Theatre project demonstrates that low-carbon materials can be both visually striking and practical for major cultural buildings, supporting broader efforts to cut embodied carbon in construction.
