Ulanqab, a city in Inner Mongolia with under 2 million people, is becoming a major AI computing hub. It has attracted over 100 data center projects, with operational capacity reaching 172,000 PFLOPS, about 8.7% of China's total. The city leverages low electricity prices (around 0.3 yuan per kWh) from the independent West Inner Mongolia Power Grid, natural cooling due to average temperatures of 4.3°C, and direct fiber connections to Beijing with 2.1 ms latency. The region is integrating renewable energy directly with data centers. Centrin Data's project pairs a 300 MW wind and solar station (16 km away) with a 220 kV line and 45 MW/180 MWh battery storage, achieving 848 million kWh of self-generated green power annually and cutting 580,000 tons of CO2. A compressed-air storage project of 1.05 GW/6.3 GWh is due by end of 2026. Ulanqab aims for 100% green electricity for its computing centers by 2027, positioning itself as a national green computing and token hub.
